Dunwoody, Georgia Probate Attorneys

Dunwoody was incorporated in 2008 and is located in northern DeKalb County. As the third richest city in Georgia, surrounding communities objected to the incorporation because they did not want to lose the tax base of Dunwoody. Even without incorporation, the citizens of Dunwoody always felt part of a distinct community with a long, rich history. Long before white settlers came to Georgia, the Native American Indians were attracted to the region by the Chattahoochee River. The river was a source of transportation and over time the area developed into a trading post. Peach Tree was the name that the Indians called the area. By the 1820’s the Indians were pushed out of the area by an influx of white settlers who came searching for gold. Dunwoody is named after Charles Dunwoody, who was born and grew up in Roswell. Dunwoody was the son of one of the founding members of the Roswell Manufacturing Company. By the 1850’s the cotton manufacturing company was so large that the owners began to see a need for a more effective form of transportation to move the cotton to Atlanta. Towards the end of the decade a railway line was proposed. Seeing a need for the mill’s products for the Civil War effort, the Georgia government approved the proposal. Ironically, the Civil War hampered construction of the railway. The railway was completed in 1881. Following the Civil War, Charles Dunwoody went back to Roswell. Seeing the widespread destruction in the area, he decided to relocate to the area that we know as Dunwoody. In the Dunwoody area he was a key player in helping rebuild the economy. He organized the rebuilding of local bridges and planted farmland that would support local residents. Once built, the new railroad fueled the local economy, as it facilitated trade between cities that otherwise would have been out of reach. The railroad eventually was shut down in 1921, but the area continued to prosper. The Georgia Power Company brought electricity to Dunwoody in 1930 and in 1932 the region’s first water plant was constructed. People came to the newly developed town and the infrastructure grew to support the population boom. Attracted by the rustic country setting, vacationers from neighboring cities made Dunwoody a popular retreat throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s. Later the construction of Interstate 285 made Dunwoody more accessible and the region’s first mall, Perimeter Mall, was built. More recently Dunwoody’s local government has developed several mixed–use districts that continue to attract visitor and residents to the city.
