DeKalb County was established in 1822 as the 56th county in Georgia and is located east of Fulton County on 269 square miles of land. Today DeKalb has a population of roughly 740,000 residents, making it the state’s most populated county after Gwinnett and Fulton. 10% of Atlanta’s population currently lives in the county, although before Fulton County was formed in 1853 out of the western half of DeKalb, all of Atlanta’s citizens lived in DeKalb County. The county was named for Baron Johann de Kalb who was born in Germany and served a noteworthy career in the French army. In 1768 he traveled to the United States on behalf of the French government. His secret mission was to discover the colonists true discontent. While performing this mission, he gained much respect for the colonists’ cause. His high regard for the colonists precipitated his return to the United States in 1777. He returned to fight with LaFayette and the Continental Army during the American Revolution. During the Civil War, DeKalb County was hit hard during the Battle of Atlanta. This battle was fought mainly in DeKalb County, near DeKalb Avenue and the courthouse. The settlers in the area had migrated from the Carolinas and Virginia and were primarily of English, Irish and Scottish descent. Relying largely on subsistence farming, the area’s economy was based on vegetable and dairy farming, cotton production and some granite quarrying. Interestingly, there is early evidence of soapstone quarrying in the Soapstone Ridge area that lies in the southern section of the county. This area was heavily excavated between 1400 and 100 BC and evidence of the trading of these soapstone objects has been found far north in the United States as the Great Lakes region. With time, as in most parts of Georgia, the agricultural economy was transformed by urbanization when highways were constructed that connected Atlanta to outlying cities and areas, such as:
