Close to Atlanta, Forsyth County was established in 1832 and is one of Georgia’s fastest growing and most prosperous areas in the metropolitan region. The population of the county is currently estimated at 160,000 residents, which is mainly due to its popularity with commuters that work in Atlanta. Forsyth was named for the Governor of Georgia, John Forsyth, who served from 1827 to 1829. Forsyth also served under Presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren as Secretary of State. The county was established with land from the Cherokee Indians and parcels from nine adjacent counties. Settlers were first drawn to Forsyth when gold was discovered, but this attraction was short–lived. It was agriculture that sustained the region until the poultry industry took hold in the 1950’s. But only when the construction of Georgia State Route 400 finally connected Forsyth to Atlanta, did continued economic growth become a reality for the county. Civil rights played a large role in Forsyth’s history. In 1987, civil rights activists organized a number of demonstrations in the hopes of showing that the county had overcome racial conflict. But angry citizens staged counter demonstrations and the friction caught the attention of the national media. 6,000 demonstrators opposed the 20,000 pro–civil rights activists that marched on January 24, 1987. This demonstration was considered to be the largest in the country since the 1970’s. Two–thirds of the pro–rights marchers were white, an indication that Forsyth had put the past to rest. As a result, despite the negative press, the pro–civil rights activists celebrated the incident as a success. Today, Forsyth County is coveted for its close proximity to Atlanta, as well as for its accessibility to the area’s stunning natural resources. The Blue Ridge Mountains and the 37,000–acre Lake Lanier are nearby attractions. Forsyth’s residents can also take advantage of the county’s world–class golf courses and network of 15 parks.
