Cumming, Georgia Probate Lawyers
Founded in 1833, Cumming is the county seat of Forsyth and is located on 5.9 square miles of land. The city is just 40 miles to the north of Atlanta, where many of its 6,000 residents commute to work each day. The earliest record of the region’s history is from 1755 when the Cherokee Indians migrated to the area. At that time, the Creek and Cherokee Indians were engaged in a two–year period dominated by battles for the surrounding hunting grounds. The Creek eventually lost their territory and migrated south of the Chattahoochee River. The Cherokee remained and lived together with the white settlers until gold was discovered in the area in 1828. With the signing of the Treaty of New Echota in 1835 and the influx of settlers attracted by the discovery of gold, the Cherokee were relocated and counties were established from the Indians lands. The city of Cumming was named after Colonel William Cumming, a high–ranking military official who also served as Major General of the US Army. Gold mining in northern Georgia attracted many settlers to Cumming, but the promise of greater wealth from the California gold rush of 1849 left the city impoverished, as miners moved west to California. New railway lines in the region created high hopes for Cumming’s lagging economy, but these hopes were dashed when the tracks built bypassed Cumming. The cotton industry supported the city through tough times, but when boll weevil infestation of 1917 hit it destroyed the cotton fields and their ability to fuel the local economy. Unfortunately, the decline of the cotton industry and civil unrest plagued the city during most of the early 20th century. Prosperous times followed World War II and relief finally came to Cumming. The Buford Dam project was proposed and approved. Once built, the dam not only provided hydroelectric power to the area, but a totally unexpected benefit came from the project. Lake Lanier, a 37,000–acre body of water, was created by the dam and soon became popular with vacationers and wealthy city dwellers looking for a place to buy water front property. Cumming really began to prosper when Georgia Route 400 was expanded. This made an easy commute from Cumming to Atlanta and created today’s popular bedroom community.
