Gwinnett County lies 30 miles from Atlanta to the northeast and is located on 437 square miles. As an important suburb of Atlanta, the population in the county has increased dramatically in the past 10 years by over 200,000. In 2009 the population was estimated at around 800,000 residents. Gwinnett was incorporated in 1818 and was named for Button Gwinnett. Button Gwinnett was a Georgia delegate and one of three men from Georgia who signed the Declaration of Independence. When formed, land for the county came mainly from Creek and Cherokee lands that were ceded from the Indians. Additionally, a small piece of the land was transferred to Gwinnett from Jackson County. One of Georgia’s fastest growing counties, Gwinnett includes the following cities:

The home of Elisha Winn was among the first buildings in the area. Located near the city of Dacula, this is where the county’s first courthouse was located. Elisha Winn was given the task of picking a site for the county seat. Winn paid $200 to buy a 250–acre piece of land in the region with this in mind. Lawrenceville was established as county seat in 1821 and official business was originally carried out from a log cabin on the site. A more permanent building was erected in 1824. In the early 1800’s, Gwinnett County was primarily a farming community. By 1851 a cotton mill was established and Lawrenceville grew to 11,257 residents. The Civil War harshly affected Gwinnett County and many buildings were destroyed, including the cotton mill that had supported the community. After the war, the courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1871. Many land deeds and other county records were lost. A new building was built, but was soon too small to house the county seat offices and was replaced in 1885 for $23,000. This building was used as the center of county operations until 1988 and today is an historic landmark known as “The Historic Courthouse.” In the late 1800’s, the expansion of railway operations helped support local economic growth. Capitalizing on the growth, the cities of Norcross, Duluth, Buford and Suwanee cropped up when the Danville and Piedmont Air Line was built. Lawrenceville grew during the late 1800’s when the railroad expanded connecting the town to Suwanee and Dacula. Two tanneries were founded around 1870 and both were famous for their handcrafted saddles. As farming declined, the two tanneries were key to supporting the local economy through the Great Depression of the 1930’s. By the mid–20th century Buford Dam had been approved and was supplying the region with much needed hydroelectric power. The building of the dam also provided revenue to the area from recreational and tourism activities. Just minutes away from Lake Lanier, Gwinnett County’s beauty and close proximity to Atlanta attract visitors to the area year–round.
