Duluth is an Atlanta suburb located 25 miles northeast of Atlanta in Gwinnett County. Situated on 10 square miles, the town was established in 1876 and today has approximately 26,000 residents. The original inhabitants of the area were the Creek and Cherokee Indians. The War of 1812 put the area on the map when an Indian trail, later known as Old Peachtree Road, was utilized by the military to join two key forts in the area. By 1818, the Indians had moved off the land and white settlers were living in the region. The city’s name was coined in 1873 after a north–south railroad linking the area to Duluth, Minnesota was approved. The town’s original name was Howell’s Cross Roads and was eventually shortened to Howell’s Crossing. Evan Howell was a cotton merchant who owned a large plantation. Howell built a road to facilitate the movement of goods between his cotton gin at Chattahoochee River and Old Peachtree Road and the town grew around this intersection. With construction of the north–south railroad, the regional economy flourished and settlers were attracted to the area’s prosperity. During the late 1800’s a Methodist Church, a school and a Baptist church were built in the town to support the population growth spurred on by the railroad. The area’s beauty was recognized early on and conservation efforts began in the 1920’s when the city’s mayor, Alice Strickland, donated an acre of land toward the conservation effort. The Georgia Historical Society recognizes Mayor Strickland’s home today as an historic location. The Mayor housed children in her home who were in need of tonsil surgery at a time when no local hospital existed. Duluth remains a charming city that has evolved over time. With over 1,600 companies located there, the city is one of the most financially stable in the state of Georgia.
